I have had a love of reading and books for nearly my entire life. Books have taken me all over the planet, and sometimes off of it to distant universes. Books have allowed me to dream of being a princess or a movie star or a myriad of other characters set in fabulous settings with wonderful heroes and heroines.
However, by the time I was in the 3rd grade, I was NOT a good reader. As the daughter of an Air Force officer, the constant moving from state to state had an effect on my education. But, I was fortunate to have a teacher who kept me after school for awhile and discovered what I was missing in my phonics education. I’ll never forget the day the light bulb went on in my head and I remember racing home, grabbing a book and not putting it down until I’d finished it. I was elated.
From then on I would read anything and everything I could lay my hands on and I always felt so grateful for this escape into fantasyland. It never occurred to me that everyone around me didn’t have the ability to just pick up a book and read it, so when I discovered this situation, early in my working career, I wanted to find a way to help every child read.
Finally, in 2000, I was fortunate enough to team up with a wonderful teacher and her daughter, who were tutoring children in reading and having fantastic results. We set about to create a one-of-a-kind approach to teaching reading…the Smart Way Reading program. My hope was that mothers would use this program to supplement their children’s reading instruction from schools so that every child has the ability to read, to explore new places, to study whatever interests them and to DREAM.
